BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Tens of thousands took part in rival demonstrations across the Ukraine on Sunday. One of the largest pro-Russian rallies was held in the eastern city of Donetsk. As CCTV’s Jack Barton reports, tense scenes ensued as people cemented their allegiance to either Ukraine or Russia.
Thousands of supporters of Russia fill the center of Donetsk in Eastern Ukraine calling for a Crimea style referendum on the future of the city and the surrounding region of Donbas.
"Donbas is not Ukraine. Donbas is Russian land," said Sergey Kuvayev, former Soviet soldier.
Others just want greater autonomy within Ukraine.
"We speak about self governance of our region first of all," said Kirill, protester.
Near the demonstration the Russian speaking presidential hopeful Vitali Klitschko held a press conference calling for unity in the east and for Russia to accept direct dialogue with Kiev over the fate of Crimea.
"What happens right now from Russia in Crimea it’s not a relationship, it’s not, it’s aggression, it’s intervention," said Vitali Klitschko, leader of Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform.
Klitschko’s visit was dismissed by the crowd outside who once again headed to the municipal headquarters. Police blocked the entrance, but did not stop them from raising a Russian flag.
The Russian flag has been going up and down this flagpole all week and while the pro-Russia group no doubt has the loudest voice in town it’s not the only voice.
One man was attacked then led to safety after tearing down a Russian flag.
A plan to hold a pro-Ukraine rally was abandoned on Sunday over concern of an attack by pro-Russian activists. Many people on the street approached us saying were opposed to merging with Russia but feared speaking on camera.
But a few dozen supporters of Ukrainian unity gathered anyway, facing off against thousands of pro-Russia activists. For a few minutes they hold their ground then are overwhelmed, some are beaten.
One thing is clear. Kiev is starting to lose control of this eastern city, where the pro-Russia rallies are now growing.
