BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhuanet) --The U.S. Defense Secretary is recommending cutting the size of the U.S. army to pre-World War II levels. In a speech at the Pentagon on Monday, Chuck Hagel said the cuts are needed due to current "fiscal challenges" faced by the U.S..
Under the plan, the number of active-duty army troops would shrink from 522,000 to below 450,000. That would take the U.S. army back to the size it was 74 years ago.
Hagel also wants a number of other cost-cutting measures, including the closure of some military bases.
But the plan still requires approval from Congress, which could insist on significant changes. Some Republicans have already hit out at the proposal, saying it would undermine U.S. military readiness.
