BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhuanet) --Visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel has met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Both sides have expressed hopes of advancing the peace process between Israel and Palestine.
Merkel said that Germany is committed to advancing the Israeli-Palestinian talks based on the two-state solution. Netanyahu said he and the people of Israel want to end the conflict peacefully. Merkel's visit comes amid the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, but it is overshadowed by reported tension between Merkel and Netanyahu.
German media reported that the chancellor was displeased with Israel's policies regarding the Jewish state's occupied territories in the West Bank and the expansion of its settlements there, viewing them as an obstacle for peace.
