BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- Hundreds of supporters and opponents of Venezuela's socialist government have hit the streets of main cities around the country to take part in competing rallies. It comes after days of violent clashes between protesters and national guard troops.
Anti-government demonstrators upset by high crime and massive inflation, are protesting the detention of opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, who dramatically surrendered to authorities earlier this week.
On Thursday, a judge ruled that there was enough evidence to hold Lopez. Charges against him stem from a massive February 12th rally. They include arson and criminal incitement. He could face ten years in prison.
