BEIJING, Feb. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Representatives of the Syrian government and opposition have met face to face in Geneva, Switzerland, for the third day in the second round of peace talks. The two sides have been unable to agree on a common agenda.
After the meeting, the opposition Syrian National Coalition’s spokesman Louay Safi said the SNC delegation had presented a document calling for the formation of a transitional governing body made up of the two parties. But Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said the SNC had "misused the agenda" of the meeting by bringing up the issue of a transitional government.
"Today we presented the, our main document outlining the various steps and principles that need to guide the transitional process, about 22 points, a document made of 22 points. Basically it called for the formation of a transitional governing body made by the two parties that will take the responsibility of establishing ceasefire, releasing prisoners of consciousness, maintaining law and order, starting a process of transitional justice for all, trying to bring reconciliation between the various components of the Syrian society," said Louay Safi.
"They (SNC) misused the agenda, started with raising the issue of the transitional government, in contradiction with the main priorities as identified by the Geneva I paper. The Syrian (government) delegation has confirmed once again that it respects the will and determination of the Syrian people to stop violence, to stop terrorism, and to take into consideration that blood that is being shed in all parts of Syria by the terrorist groups," said Faisal Mekdad.
