BEIJING, Feb. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Wang Yu-chi, Taiwan's mainland affairs chief, is on the second day of his trip to the mainland. He paid his respects at Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum on Wednesday morning, and delivered a speech at Nanjing University.
392 stairs to climb, Wang Yu-chi, Taiwan's mainland affairs chief, started the second day of his trip on the mainland with a visit to Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing.
"The most important issue for now is that the two sides of the Straits should face the reality to solve the problem, so that we can build stable cross-Strait relations, improve the benefits for the people, and build the Taiwan Straits into a sea of peace and cooperation," Wang said.
Dr. Sun Yat-sen is considered one of the greatest leaders of modern China. He was the co-founder and first leader of the Kuomintang. His mausoleum in Nanjing, is a symbolic place for leaders from both the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan to visit. Many Kuomintang leaders visited here on their trip to the mainland.
Wang Yu-chi delivered a speech at the Nanjing University in the afternoon. He recalled his experience of debating with students from the school in a competition back in 1990, and emphasized the importance of youth exchanges.
"He is talking about more substantial measures, such as medical care and scholarships for exchange students from the Mainland to Taiwan. I think it'is progress," Guo Qinyi, a student at Nanjing University, said.
"His experience in communication with students from the Mainland resonates with me of my own. I am quite touched," Xue Meng, a student at Nanjing University, said.
Wang and his delegation will leave Nanjing and head for Shanghai on Thursday.
