BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Academy Award nominee Matthew McConaughey was in Rome this week for the Italian premiere of his acclaimed drama Dallas Buyers Club. He shared stories about the film’s struggles and his gruelling schedule to lose more than 20 kilos.
The true life drama is shortlisted for six Oscars, including best film and best actor for its star. Set during the early days of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, the film follows Texan Ron Woodroof, who is told by doctors he is HIV positive and has just thirty days to live. At a press conference ahead of the premiere, McConaughey described the hurdles the filmmakers had to jump to get their now celebrated tale to the big screen.
"Script was around for twenty years. And it was rejected 137 times. So it was a minor miracle the fact that we did get it made. The financing fell through, many, many times. It fell through on us five weeks before we were scheduled to shoot. So the fact that we got it made was the most difficult part." Matthew McConaughey said.
McConaughey revealed he lost around 23 kilos to play the lead role. He explained he did so by following a strict diet.
"The weight loss that was a very militant thing for me. I got with a doctor and we figured out exactly how many pounds I needed to lose and how. I gave myself four months to do it so I was losing about three and half pounds a week. And that was just militant. I had certain meals, I became a hermit, I just stayed inside, I didn’t go out and socialize, I didn’t go and meet someone at the restaurant. I just stayed inside and surrounded myself with everything Ron Woodroof and everything Dallas Buyers Club." Matthew McConaughey said.
The film’s Oscar nominations also include best original screenplay and supporting actor for Jared Leto, who plays a drug addicted transsexual. The Academy Award winners will be announced on March 2nd.
