BEIJING, Jan. 26 (Xinhuanet) --The Egyptian police have arrested over one thousand supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi over charges of riots and attempted violence. The arrests came during Saturday's mass celebrations marking the third anniversary of the January 25th unrest that toppled ex-president Hosni Mubarak.
A statement from the Interior Ministry said that Morsi's supporters, mostly from the Muslim Brotherhood and their affiliates, attempted to ruin the celebrations "by staging marches to block traffic, shouting hostile slogans and inciting riots."
At least 29 people were killed and around 170 others were injured during clashes between security forces and pro-Morsi protesters as well as some anti-government activists.
Similar clashes on Friday left 15 people dead and several others injured.
