Feng Yanfeng, who is a permanent resident of the United States turned himself into local police two days after the fire on New Year's Day. He told investigators that he tried to use his passport to ignite gasoline he had poured on the consulate's door and steps.
No one was injured in the fire that charred the door and damaged the lobby of the building.
The FBI says investigation into the motive is ongoing. Feng made his first court appearance on January the 7th, on charges of arson and causing damage to the property of a foreign government.
The court appointed a public defender as his attorney because he said he could not afford one.
