Sir Run Run Shaw passes away at age of 107

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Hong Kong media tycoon and philanthropist, Sir Run Run Shaw has passed away at his home at the age of 107.

Sir Shaw produced more than 300 films and helped popularise Chinese kung fu films and Asian cinema in the West. He co-funded a Singapore-based film distribution and cinema chain, the Shaw Organisation in 1924, Shaw Brothers Studio in 1930, and Hong Kong broadcasting conglomerate, Television Broadcast Limited, in 1967.

Shaw has endowed the Shaw Prize, offering up to 1 million US dollars annually for achievements in astronomy, mathematics, and life and medical science. He has also donated over 400 million US dollars to the Chinese mainland for the construction of some 5-thousand education and hospital projects.
