BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Hundreds of people across Turkey have taken to the streets to call for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's resignation amid a government corruption scandal. Demonstrators claimed that bribery is everywhere in the country.
"We no longer believe that any institution in this country is run in a healthy way. There’s bribery everywhere. The police don’t even follow the prosecutor’s orders. It feels as if no wheels are turning. We’re opposed to this, and that’s why we’re here, to improve it." Demonstrator Ozan Koksal said.
Protests on Thursday stretched from the city of Istanbul, to Izmir in the west, to Adana in the south. Chanting slogans, the protesters marched through the streets and neighbourhoods.
On the same day, newly-appointed Turkish cabinet ministers took office in Ankara. At least two new ministers and one appointed to a new post attended a national security meeting, alongside Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul. Erdogan reshuffled his Cabinet on Wednesday, replacing 10 ministers hours after three ministers resigned.
Their resignations came after their sons were detained in a sweeping corruption probe. One of those ministers also called on Erdogan to step down.
