Former Chilean President Bachelet wins presidential run-off

BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Chile's popular center-left leader Michelle Bachelet has won a presidential run-off against right-wing candidate Evelyn Matthei. With 90 percent of the votes counted, former president Bachelet has an unbeatable 62 percent and Matthei's spokeswoman has conceded defeat.

Both candidates headed to polling stations on Sunday to cast their ballots in Chile’s first presidential showdown between two women.

Bachelet ran on a promise to reduce the country’s huge wealth gap. And after a strong showing in the first round of voting, she was virtually guaranteed to win. Her right-wing rival Matthei was weakened by her family’s ties to the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet and by her position in the unpopular government of outgoing President Sebastian Pinera.

Bachelet promises to finance education with higher corporate taxes, reduce the wealth gap, protect the environment and reform the constitution.
