BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese people have joined the world in remembering Nelson Mandela. The Chinese Embassy in South Africa has lowered its flag to half-mast to honor the late former South African president, who has been called "an old friend of China". Many believe Mandela’s legacy is also an inspiration to China, as the country continues to push forward with its own reforms.

After meeting with French Prime Minster Jean-Marc Ayrault on Friday morning, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang sent his condolences to Mandela's family and the people of South Africa.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said, "The honorable Mr. Nelson Mandela passed away early this morning. We’re deeply grieved. Before Prime Minister Ayrault and I started our talk, we expressed our sorrow about this news. Mr. Mandela was a famous leader during the anti-apartheid era, and also a renowned politician. We mourn for his death. Also we send our condolences to the people of South Africa and Mr. Mandela’s families and friends."

China’s Foreign Ministry also issued a statement on the passing of a respected ally.

"Mr. Mandela is a renowned politician in the world. He has made important contributions to the founding and development of China-South Africa relations. He is not only revered by the South African people, but also loved by the international community, including the Chinese people," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.

Mandela’s death was mourned by not only Chinese officials, but also the Chinese people.

"He’s a very un-selfish person."

"Although he has been sick for a while, I felt very sad when I heard the news of his death."

" I’ve known about him since I was very young. I feel depressed today. This morning when I saw the news, it was really a great shock to me."

"I suddenly think of the song, 'The Glorious Time'. I’ve known about Mandela for a long time, and the song about his life."

"The Glorious Time" is a famous Chinese song about Nelson Mandela written in 1990. For decades, people have sung it to celebrate Mandela’s birthday. Today, it is sung to remember his legacy.

Mandela’s death has been a headline on all major Chinese news websites. It’s also been a top story on Sina Weibo, China’s version of Twitter.

Flowers were left in front of the South African embassy in Beijing, a sign of deep respect for the man and his principles. The South African embassy is flying the flag at half-mast.

In China, Nelson Mandela is a name most people know well, and deeply respect. At a time when China faces mounting challenges in deepening reforms, his life and what he achieved encourages many here in China, with the hope that even great changes are possible.
