MANILA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Death toll in the Philippines from typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) jumped to 1,833 with initial cost of damage increasing to 761.4 million pesos (17.4 million U.S. dollars), a senior government official said on Wednesday morning.
The additional fatalities coming from Western Visayas reached 103, while the number of those who perished in Eastern Visayas remained at 1,660, said Eduardo del Rosario, executive director of the Philippines' National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). Full story
Philippine typhoon death toll climbs to 1,774
MANILA, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The number of deaths caused by super typhoon "Haiyan" (local name Yolanda) rose to 1,774 by Monday night, a Philippine government agency said.
Of the total fatalities, 1,660 were found in worst-hit eastern Visayas region, said National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesman Rey Balido said.
He said 82 were still missing and 2,487 were injured. Full story
Obama affirms support for Philippines' relief efforts
WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday called his Philippine counterpart Benigno Aquino III to affirm U.S. support for his country's relief efforts in the wake of a devastating attack by Super Typhoon Haiyan.
Obama expressed his "deep condolences" for the lives lost and damage caused by Haiyan, one of the strongest storms to ever hit land, the White House said in a statement. Full story
