3D technology behind the fashion industry

BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- High technology is playing a big role in the fashion industry. As we see at the Chinese Fashion Week, a 3D fitting system has completely changed the way many designers work.

Models may dazzle the runway in ready-to-wear collections. But you may be surprised to hear that behind many of those stunning looks, is some hi-tech gadgetry.

These days, designers are getting a big boost from a 3D fitting system. It transfers sketches into 3D versions, trying them out first on a virtual computer model. The designer can preview how the garment looks, then make adjustments with a click of the mouse.

"In the past the designer had to look at hundreds of finished garments before deciding which one should go on the runway. But now, the system saves a lot of time and materials. It’s very efficient," system developer Liu Youran said.

The technology can be used for custom-tailoring as well. A scanner can record a person’s shape and make a virtual 3D model on a computer. The designer can then use that model to make individual designs.

The system is also being used in some clothing stores, allowing shoppers to see how clothes look without trying them on. That's a welcome change for customers who don’t have time to wait in line outside fitting rooms.
