BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- The European Union will seek talks with the US over the alleged spying on its European allies under the Franco-German initiative. European Council President Herman Van Rompuy made these comments in Brussels, and he has emphasized the significance of respect and trust in intelligence gathering.
"As the state of government underlined the close relationship between Europe and the US, and value that partnership. They expressed their conviction on the partnership must be based on respects, and on trust, including, as concerns the work and cooperation of secret services..., a lack of trust, will prejudice the necessary cooperation, in the field of intelligence gathering." Said Rompuy.
Van Rompuy made the comments after finishing the first day of a two-day summit. Politicians in Berlin reacted to the news of the allegations that the US intelligence targeted German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone on Thursday.
The Foreign Ministry summoned the US Ambassador to complain, while Germany’s defence minister commented that Europe can’t simply return to normal trans-Atlantic ties following the US spying incidences. And France has also summoned the US ambassador and demanded an explanation of a report the US swept up millions of French phone records.
