BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel has taken part in a meeting of the European People’s Party in Belgium, amid allegations that she may have been targeted through her mobile phone. Germany’s Foreign Ministry summoned the U.S. ambassador in Berlin on Thursday over the matter.
Merkel did not speak to the media when she arrived for the EPP meeting, but her government says she demanded clarification from President Barack Obama on Wednesday.
The White House says the U.S. isn’t monitoring and won’t monitor Merkel’s communications, but didn’t address what might have happened in the past.
Ministers from the bloc say such actions are not acceptable and it should not happen again.
"That (phone-tapping) is of course unacceptable, but I think it is very important that we understand that there is a capacity to do things, where we need to secure that it is not used in the way it should not be used, and this is an example of what it should not be used for," Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said.
"According to our fundamental rights, all the citizens, including politicians, have similar rights, and illegal monitoring of cell phones or whatever is unacceptable," Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen said.
