BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia’s central investigative agency has identified the female suicide bomber who blew herself up on a city bus in Volgograd, southern Russia, on Monday. Officials believe the woman was from Dagestan in the North Caucasus, and was the partner of an Islamist militant.

"According to preliminary information, the suicide bombing was carried out by a Dagestan native, Naida Asiyalova, 30 years old. According to information the investigators have at the moment, this woman got on the bus at one of the stops, and after that the explosion went off almost immediately. A female bus passenger who survived the explosion also confirmed it." said Vladimir Markin, Spokesman, Russian Investigative Committee.

The spokesman says seven people including the suicide bomber were killed in the blast, and 33 sought medical assistance, 28 of whom were taken to hospital. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the deadly bombing, but investigators are calling it a terrorist attack. Volgograd has announced a 3-day mourning for the victims starting from Tuesday. Volgograd is located about 650 kilometers to the northeast of the North Caucasus.

Monday’s bombing is certain to add to security fears ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, which sits to the west of the North Caucasus, along the Black Sea.
