49 believed dead in plane crash in Laos

BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- A Lao Airlines passenger plane has crashed into the Mekong river in southern Laos killing all 49 people on board. The plane appears to have been hit by strong winds as it was coming in to land.

The plane crashed on Wednesday afternoon near Pakse, Champasak province, which is on the borders of both Thailand and Cambodia.Authorities say 44 passengers and five crew were on the flight from the Lao capital, Vientiane.

The passengers included 17 Laos, seven French, five Australians, five Thais, three Koreans, two Vietnamese and one person each from Canada, Chinese mainland, Malaysia, Taiwan and the United States.
