BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Asiana Airlines is South Korea’s second-largest carrier. It was founded in 1988 and has been growing steadily over the past 25 years. It has a fleet of 79 planes, about half as many as flag carrier Korean Air.
Asiana’s last accident was in July 2011. A cargo flight bound for Shanghai Pudong Airport from Incheon Airport crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Jeju Island, South Korea. It happened after fire was reported in the cargo compartment. Asiana’s deadliest accident was in July 1993, a domestic flight.
A Boeing 737 crashed in poor weather about 4 kilometers short of the runway in Mokpo Airport while making its third landing attempt. Two of the 6 crew members and 66 of the 110 passengers on board were killed. Mokpo is a city in South Jeolla Province.
