BEIJING, June 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Libya's parliament has elected Nouri Abu-sahmain, a member of the Berber minority, as its president. Abu-sahmain won 96 votes, compared with 80 for his opponent Al-Sharif al-Wafi.
Abu-sahmain is a native of the western coastal town of Zu-wara. The Berber language was once suppressed when Muammar Gaddafi was in power. Abu-sahmain had worked in the General National Congress’ presidential office. He studied law and worked in a major petrochemicals plant near his hometown. As congress president, he will now lead the body in preparing for the drafting of a new constitution, after elections are held to choose a new constitutional committee.
The previous head of the congress, Mohammed Ma-garief, stepped down after a law was enacted banning anyone who held a senior post under Gaddafi from government.
