BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Albania’s ruling party and opposition have both claimed victory in the country’s parliamentary election. Opposition Socialist Party leader Edi Rama has called on Prime Minister Sali Berisha to prepare for the transition of power. He gave no figures and Berisha’s Democratic Party swiftly disputed the claim.
So far, two exit polls have failed to determine a decisive winner. In the absence of any official result from the Central Election Commission, fears of fresh confrontation between socialists and democrats have been raised.
This year’s vote has already been marred by the fatal shooting of an opposition activist in the northwestern Lac region. And in 2009, when opposition leader Rama lost the last election, four opposition protesters were shot dead by security forces.
