HK police: Snowden case to be handled according to Hong Kong SAR law

English.news.cn   2013-06-23 10:22:09

BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhuanet) -- Hong Kong authorities say they will deal with the case in accordance with the law of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Police Commissioner Andy Tsang said the laws that are enforced in Hong Kong are Hong Kong laws, not foreign laws. He declined to give more details. Hong Kong Executive Council member Regina Ip said authorities had to decide if Snowden’s actions would be classed as a crime under Hong Kong law. If so, the police could arrest him. But if it is determined to be a political charge, Snowden will not be extradited to the US.

Rimsky Yuen, Hong Kong Secretary of Justice, said, "If the mechanism of extradition begins, everything is the same with previous cases. We will work under the framework of Hong Kong law, and won’t allow any illegal or unfair judgment."
