BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhuanet) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has granted a salary raise to the state’s public servants, military personnel and retired employees. The decision, announced Saturday, came in light of the US dollar’s increasing exchange rate against the Syrian pound.
Recent data shows that public servants have lost up to 70 percent of their incomes because of the foreign exchange crisis. And prices of almost all commodities in Syria have increased by as much as 200 percent over the past few months. The government is expected to take firmer measures to rescue the country’s currency value.
