BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhuanet) -- The death toll from the fire in Northeast China’s Jilin Province has climbed to 119, with fifty more injured.
Latest reports coming in say that much of the fire has been put out and rescue work is underway. The fire broke out early in the morning at the slaughterhouse of a poultry processing plant in Mishazi Township of Dehui City. The owner of the plant, Jilin Baoyuanfeng Poultry Company, is a major producer of processed chicken and employs about 1,200 people.
Initial investigations pointed to an explosion caused due to the build up of ammonia gas at the plant. Rescuers are finding it hard to enter the house, due to its complicated interior structure and its narrow exits. The exact number of those trapped inside has still not been confirmed.
A news conference has been held by local authorities to brief on the latest development of the case.
Zhao Xian, Deputy Director of Changchun Municipal Emergency Office, said, "Rescue work is still underway. The rescuers are trying their utmost to search for any survivors in the fire. We’ll do our best to treat the wounded, identify the victims and investigate the cause of the incident. We’ll also give timely updates of the latest information to the public."
