BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- In Tunisia, there’ve been clashes between mourners and police at the funeral of an assassinated opposition politician. Chokri Belaid’s killing on Wednesday has plunged the country deeper into political crisis.
Police fired teargas at demonstrators outside the cemetery in Tunis where Belaid is being laid to rest. They’d earlier fired shots in the air to disperse youths who were smashing up cars. Tens of thousands of mourners surged around an open army truck carrying Belaid’s coffin, chanting anti-Islamist slogans.
A general strike has also been held in Tunisia, which was called by the country’s main labor union, to coincide with the funeral. Schools, shops, banks and other institutions have all been closed.
