BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- The US State Department says the U.S. is working closely with Algeria. Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland rejected a demand by militants to trade two American hostages for Islamists jailed in the United States.
Victoria Nuland, Spokeswoman of US Department of State, said, "The United States does not negotiate with terrorists. The situation remains extremely fluid on the ground. We are continuing our work with the government of Algeria and with other affected nations to try to resolve this issue."
The Obama administration said on Friday it was trying to secure the release of Americans still being held hostage. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton spoke with Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal to express concern about the remaining U.S. citizens in captivity and to demand that any counter-terrorism operation ensure civilian losses are minimalized.
