BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Japan’s new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has officially taken office and presented his cabinet at a news conference.
Abe has appointed a cabinet of close allies. Former Prime Minister Taro Aso took the posts of vice prime minister, financial minister and financial services minister. The former president of the Liberal Democratic Party, Tanigaki Sadakazu, is the new justice minister.
Itsunori Onodera becomes defense minister. He was senior vice foreign minister in Abe’s first cabinet.
Abe also appointed Fumio Kishida to the top post in the Foreign Ministry. Kishida was a former state minister for issues related to Okinawa Island.
During the election campaign, Abe promised to stand firm against China in territorial disputes. He also promised to make strengthening Japan’s alliance with the US a priority.
