BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- A showcase of the best Chinese films is taking place in Taiwan as we speak, they are competing for the Golden Horse Awards, regarded as the Chinese language Oscars. Films from the Chinese mainland have gained more prominence in recent years.

Mainland production "Beijing Blues" is about plain-clothes crime-hunters trying to track down a cunning robber. The film is full of dry humor and local idioms and scenes of Beijing. It is a contender for the grand prize.

Another competitor is also a detective film call "The Bullet Vanishes", a Hong Kong-Mainland co-production about a detective investigating a series of murders in Shanghai in the 1930s.

Director Johnnie To’s Hong Kong film, "Life Without Principle," is about ordinary citizens caught up in the fallout of the global financial meltdown.

To is also up for best director, while veteran actor Lau Ching Wan, who portrays a triad thug seeking to recover money, is seen as a favorite for best actor.

Taiwan-made "Girlfriend Boyfriend" has seven nominations, including awards for film and director.

Its best shot at a prize may be in the best actor category, where Joseph Chang portrays a man caught up in a romantic triangle involving three former high-school classmates.
