BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Airbus has announced the opening of a new assembly plant in the US port city of Mobile, Alabama. The plant will assemble the company’s A320 planes.
The world’s largest commercial jet-maker estimates the plant will create 1,000 new jobs. The European company hopes to strike directly at rival Boeing on its home turf, creating a springboard for future bids to win US aircraft and defense deals.
US Senator Jeff Sessions attended the announcement, praising the deal as a victory for his state. The 600 million dollar plant is set to open in 2016. It will be the second Airbus plant outside Europe making the company’s most popular jet.
