BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhuanet) -- The Russia-European Union Summit is being held in St. Petersburg. The EU is likely to explore Russian President Vladimir Putin’s commitment to closer ties and try to shift his government’s stance on Syria during the Summit.
European diplomats have called the summit a chance to get reacquainted with the Kremlin as it is the first Russia-EU summit since Putin’s return to the presidency. On Sunday ahead of an informal dinner, Putin greeted both European Council and European Commission presidents.
Leaders are expected to exchange views on global economic developments and the situation in the eurozone. They will also touch on issues including developments in Syria, and Iran. As Russia is to join the World Trade Organisation this year, the summit will also discuss Russia’s WTO accession and areas where the EU and Russia can collaborate on trade and energy issues.
