BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- The situation remains critical in a northern area of the Netherlands on Friday, as a main dyke threatens to fail following heavy flooding.
Local authorities evacuated 800 residents and thousands of cattle from four villages in the area around Woltersum in the Dutch province of Groningen.
Dutch soldiers and police packed sandbags along a 400 meter section of the dyke to help plug the leaks. Roads into the area were blocked.
The military also assigned an F16 jet to monitor the strength of the dyke with an infrared camera. More than half the population in the Netherlands lives in areas below sea level.
