BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Masterpieces from some of Latin America's most revered artists went on sale in Mexico City on Thursday, sending art collectors around the world buzzing as they put in their bids for works by the likes of Diego Rivera, Pedro Freideberg and David Alfaro Siqueiros.
Nearly 200 pieces from across the continent went under the hammer in what many critics have called one of the greatest auctions of Latin American art ever.
Vivian Gorenstein, Modern Art MNGR, Morton Auction House, said "This auction of Latin American art includes 193 pieces of paintings, sculptures and photography. Mexican and Latin American artists featured are Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Roberto Montenegro, Roberto Cortazar, Jesus Guerrero Galvan, Carlos Merida and also Latin American artists like Kcho and Eduardo Kingman, for example."
With the body of work dating from the early 20th Century to present, the impressive collection of modern and contemporary art combines Latin art legends such as Siquieros and Cortazar alongside upcoming contemporary artists such as Hugo Lugo and Boris Viski.
The sale's most sought after piece is Rivera's 1929 "Tehuana," portrait of an indigenous Mexican woman. With public interest in the sale strong, the auction house has opened its doors to local art aficionados and turned its rooms into a makeshift museum. The November 10th auction is expected to fetch millions with international bids via phone and internet bids running hot in the lead up to the sale.
