VALLETTA, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The Number of tourist arrivals in Malta archipelago in April reached 150,030, increasing 12.2 percent year-on-year, Malta's National Statistics Office's statistics showed on Wednesday.
A total of 122,129 inbound tourists were for holiday purposes, while 11,103 for business purposes. Other 16,798 passengers visited Malta with cruise ship.
Most inbound tourists came from the European Union (EU) member states, with the largest proportion of inbound tourists were aged between 45 and 64, while tourists from Non-EU countries increased by 39.3 percent.
Total nights of stay reached 1,023,035 nights, 16.4 percent up when compared to April of 2013.
Total tourist expenditure was estimated at 114.7 million euros (156 million U.S. dollars), an increase of 13 percent over the corresponding month last year.
Inbound tourism from January to April amounted to 382,654, an increase of 8.9 percent over the corresponding period in 2013.
Total nights spent by inbound tourists went up by 8.4 percent, reaching nearly 2.8 million nights.
Malta is expected to hit record levels of 1.6 million tourists annually, three times the islands' own population. Tourism constitutes nearly 30 percent of the Maltese economy.
