VIENNA, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Despite an increase in the number of visitors to Austria last winter, the number of overnight stays fell about 1 million, Statistics Austria revealed Tuesday.
The total number of visitors between November 2013 and April 2014 rose to 16.87 million, but both Austrian nationals and foreigners booked 1.7 percent fewer overnight stays at hotels.
The nation's capital recorded a significant increase of 6.35 percent in overnight stays during the six-month period but, despite moderate increases in two other states, the overall trend was down.
Overnight stays from German visitors, who traditionally contribute strongly to the Austrian tourism industry, plunged 4.3 percent, with the total for all foreigners down 1.9 percent, compared with 2012-13.
Increases, however, came from visitors from the United States, Poland and Belgium, up 7.9 percent, 5.3 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively, compared with 2012-13.
