Maldives issues travel advisory on Thailand

English.news.cn   2014-05-26 20:57:09

COLOMBO, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives government has issued a travel advisory cautioning its citizens travelling to Thailand after the Thai army seized power in a widely condemned coup, the foreign ministry said in a statement. In a travel advisory, the foreign ministry cautioned Maldivians, especially those in Thai capital Bangkok, to avoid protest sites and pay attention to local media reports.

Maldivians should allow extra time when travelling throughout the city or to and from airports, and consider using public transportation, the ministry said. "Maldivians travelling to Thailand should take all necessary precautions for personal safety, and purchase comprehensive travel and medical insurance," the advisory read. Maldivians who are in need of consular assistance while in Bangkok are also advised to contact the consulate-general in the country or the foreign ministry. Thailand's army chief seized power in a military coup last week, deposing the elected government and plunging the country into uncertainty after months of deadly political strife.

A night-time curfew imposed by the junta has tamed the capital 's tourist districts, further chilling a vital visitor industry already cooled by the long-term strife.
