BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- If you're not watching pandas online this summer you might be enjoying the great outdoors. And many people love to spend their days by the sea, both to beat the heat and to take a dip. But in the Serbian capital Belgrade, where the Danube and Sava rivers cross, locals and tourists are flocking to the city’s river banks to have some summer fun.
It’s hard to resist the lure of the rivers that run through Belgrade, especially when there are two. Locals have built riverside residences - cabins that are attached to a dock, and floating on the river.
River Cabin Owner said, "These floating cabins first emerged in the 1970’s. People make use of the beautiful riverbanks... Now I guess there must be hundreds or thousands of them. Not only in Belgrade, there are cabins all along the two rivers."
The cabins are typically constructed on wooden platforms buoyed by metal barrels. The size and design depend on the owner’s requirements. Some are so tiny that they can barely fit a bed and a stove, while some are spread over two floors like a small mansion.
When smoke rises over the cabins - it means a barbecue is going on, or pots are simmering with beans or fish soup.
River Cabin Owner said, "I like to live here in summer. The wind blows as we have a barbecue party... It’s much better than watching TV in an air-conditioned room. We can even jump into the river if we want to. It’s a great area for swimming. "
This is probably the most popular way for the people of Belgrade to escape the city noise, and to have some fun in the river.
Tourists have gradually joined locals to share the wonders of the riverbank in recent years. Entrepreneurs are also flooding in to open up cafes and bars along the river, adding a bit of romance to Belgrade’s beautiful waterways.
