Uganda unveils new national rugby coach

KAMPALA, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) unveiled a new national coach who will be in charge of the team on Tuesday.

Andrew Owor, the Union president, said the South African born coach Johannes Beukes will handle the national side.

"We are happy to have an experienced coach come to work with us," Owor said.

Beukes replaced former national team skipper Peter Magona who opted not to renew his contract after the national team recorded miserable results last year.

The well trained Beukes is also part of the coaching staff at a South African club, Cheetahs. While Uganda is expected to cater for accommodation, travel and upkeep costs, the Cheetahs team will take care of the other costs including the basic salary.

Beukes' appointment is a result of the development partnership that the URU signed with Cheetahs club last year.

After signing of the agreement, Cheetah's coach Naka Drotske visited Uganda last year. Beukes becomes the third South African coach to manage the Rugby Cranes team after Chester Williams and David Dobella.
