BUENOS AIRES, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Argentinean tennis player Juan Martin Del Potro will return to competition at an upcoming Sydney tournament and then the Australia Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, after 10 months of recovery from a wrist injury.

"I wanted to tell you I have decided to play in Sydney and the Australia Open," the winner of the 2009 U.S. Open posted on his Facebook page.

"I really missed the circuit, I missed competing," he said, adding he plans to compete again despite suffering from on-again-off-again wrist pain.

"The pain in my (left) hand comes and goes," said Del Potro, 26, who had originally planned his comeback at the Brisbane International, taking place now.

"I don't expect great results, just to feel the sensation of competing again, the sensation of being an active player again, after almost a year of being absent" from competition," said Del Potro.

Del Potro, currently ranked No. 135 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), last played a competitive match on Feb. 25, 2014, against India's Somdev Devvarman in Dubai. The Sydney tournament begins Jan. 12.

The young Del Potro has won 18 titles in his professional career, and was ranked the world's 4th best player in 2010.
