THE HAGUE, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- After a lackluster performance and defensive errors Ajax suffered a 4-0 defeat at home to Vitesse on Thursday in the last sixteen of the KNVB Beker, the Dutch Cup.
Vitesse forward Bertrand Traore opened the scoring after a mistake by Joel Veltman and on the stroke of half-time Ajax captain Davy Klaassen handed the ball to Vitesse' s Zakaria Labyad and he smashed home the second away goal.
In the second half another mistake by Veltman led to the 3-0 by Traore and Valeri Qazaishvili made it 4-0 after bad defending by Ajax.
The home defeat to Vitesse was equal to the biggest defeats in the history of Ajax since the introduction of professional football in the Netherlands in 1954. The other major home losses occurred in 2005 against PSV (0-4, Eredivisie) and in 2010 against Real Madrid (0-4, Champions League).
On Tuesday Dutch Cup holders PEC Zwolle beat VVV-Venlo 1-0 in Venlo to go through, while SC Cambuur defeated Heracles 3-0 in Almelo. On Wednesday FC Twente won at De Graafschap, AZ beat NEC 2-1, while FC Groningen was too strong for FC Volendam.
Earlier On Thursday Excelsior crushed NAC Breda 6-0. The remaining match in the last sixteen between Roda JC Kerkrade and Dutch league leaders PSV will be played on January 20, 2015.
