Paolo Montero takes over as interim coach of Uruguay's Penarol

MONTEVIDEO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Retired Uruguayan football player Paolo Montero Tuesday was named interim coach of troubled team Penarol.

Penarol coach Jorge Fossatti offered his resignation, after another poor performance over the weekend by the once-leading team, which is now trailing in fourth place in the Uruguayan Opening Tournament, 14 points behind top-ranked Nacional.

The former captian of Uruguay's national team and of Italy's Juventus was heading the club's third-division team and will take over as the coach of the main team for the three games still left to play in the Opening Tournament.

"The Third Division coach takes over the First Division team" is how the Uruguayan News Agency (uypress) reported the decision by team management, following Sunday's 1-2 loss to Nacional, which came from behind to clinch the game, with a winning goal in injury time.

"I don't like arriving in this way," Montero, 43, told reporters prior to leading his first training session with the squad. "I like to arrive places on my own merits, if I did well."

Montero said he was saddened by Fossatti's departure, but "hopeful" he can make a difference.
