NANJING, China, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Just weeks after seeing her sister Becky Downie win two gold medals for England at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Elissa Downie, 15, is hoping to emulate her achievements in the artistic gymnastics at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
"I went to watch my sister at the Commonwealth Games, so I was able to see her get her medals," said the younger Downie.
"She is an inspiration for me because watching her I want to be there as well. I got into gymnastics because of her."
Elissa, who won the junior vault title, team silver and bronze in the all-around event at the European Championships held in Sofia, Bulgaria, in May 2014, is carrying a slight injury to her right ankle, which means her planned floor routine will be adjusted.
With big sister Becky watching via the internet while Elissa competes, the youngster is hoping to add to the family's collection of medals.
"If I perform to my best I could medal in the all-around and hopefully medal either on floor or vault," she said, "I'm hoping this is a stepping stone for the 2016 Olympic Games, but I'm here to enjoy it."
