BERLIN, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Spain international Javi Martinez will be out for several months with a knee injury, the "Bavarians" announced in an official statement on Thursday.
The worst came to the worst for Bayern Munich, as the German giants did not only lose 2-0 against Dortmund at the Supercup, but they also lost they defensive midfielder Javi Martinez for the rest of the year.
The 25-year-old suffered the injury during a shot attempt, which was blocked by Marcel Schmelzer. Martinez was unable to continue, as he had to be stretchered off the pitch.
An examination by club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt revealed today that Martinez suffered a cruciate ligament tear in his left knee. The Spaniard will be operated in the next days in Colorado, USA. He will be thus out for rest of the year.
"Of course, I am really sad at the moment, but you don' t need to worry I will return stronger," Javi Martinez said. The Spain international made overall 43 appearances and three goals. He won moreover seven titles with the German record champions.
"It is a bad new for us," Pep Guardiola said. The loss of Javi Martinez is a setback for Guardiola, who had been relying on the Spaniard as his trustee for the defensive midfield for the upcoming season.
