ACCRA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Ghana's minister of Youth and Sports, Mahama Ayariga, has reiterated the government's readiness to reposition school sports to unearth talents to represent the country during international competitions.
He made this statement when he met representatives from the Ghana Education Service (GES) in Accra to discuss how best the two bodies could collaborate to reposition school sports in the nation, the ministry said in a statement issued here on Monday.
Ayariga said the government was ready to develop sports infrastructure from the junior to the senior high school to help promote and develop sports.
He noted that schools competitions like the inter-schools competitions had been on a low key over the period but it was the vision of his outfit to rejuvenate such games to unearth talents at the grassroots level.
The minister requested the setting up of a joint working group on school sports to be tasked among other things to review and present a comprehensive program for the development and promotion of school sports.
"The committee will be made to review the state of infrastructure in basic and senior high school sports, develop a framework and program for capacity-building of physical education teachers and also develop a year-long program for school sports competition," the statement said.
It will also be tasked to propose mechanisms for financing of school sports, propose strategy for the linkage of school sports athletes to national teams for quality representation of Ghana in international competitions, and also develop a strategy to ensure that students took active participation in academic work and sports.
Stephen Adu, Director of Basic education at the GES, commended the minister for his initiative and added that his unit was ready to support the Youth and Sports ministry in this direction.
He indicated that school sports had gone down in recent times because of lack of funds and that his institution was ready to work hand-in-hand with the ministry to ensure that school sports saw the needed improvement.
