GLASGOW, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Olympic 800m champion and world record holder David Rudisha of Kenya suffered a surprise defeat to Nijel Amos in the Commonwealth Games here on Thursday.
The 20-year-old Amos, who finished second behind Rudisha at the London Olympics, outsprinted Rudisha down the straight for the gold medal.
Rudisha, who has struggled to recovered from a knee injury sustained in 2013, could do nothing with 50 meters to go as Botswana's Amos went past him.
Amos clocked 45.18 seconds and Rudisha was 1:45.48. South Africa's andre Olivier took bronze.
"I am so happy but David Rudisha will always be the hero of 800m," said Amos after the race.
Rudisha said: "The race was good, but in the last 100m I found it a little bit difficult. He is a tough competitor. We ran a tactical race, but he was good tonight."
