China wins two synchronized gold at FINA Diving World Cup

English.news.cn   2014-07-17 07:36:41

SHANGHAI, July 16 (Xinhua) -- China claimed the women's three-meter springboard synchronized and the men's 10m platform synchronized titles at the 2014 FINA Diving World Cup here on Wednesday.

London Olympic champion Wu Minxia and her younger partner Shi Tingmao collected 340.50 points to win gold in the women's 3m springboard synchronized. Canadian pair Jennifer Abel/Pamela Ware finished second in 318.33, while Australia's Maddison Keeney/Anabelle Smith came third in 310.14.

The 3m springboard synchro was the only event Wu took part in at the World Cup. The 28-year-old said she needs time to do some adjustment and she wants to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games.

"I hope I can stand on the springboard in Rio at the Olympic Games," said Wu, the oldest diver on China's "dream team".

In the men's 10m platform synchro, Lin Yue and Cao Yuan led from the beginning to win the gold in 494.46, beating the German pair Sascha Matthias Klein/Patrick Hausding to the second place with 444.78. London Olympic champion David Boudia and his new partner Steele Johnson were third in 414.12.

"Cao performed better than me," said Lin, winner of the event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with Huo Liang. "I have not claimed good results in major competitions since 2009 and I have been waiting for the gold for a long time."

Lin failed to make the final of the 10m platform at the 2013 Barcelona Worlds.

The Germans were satisfied with their silver. "We are satisfied with the competition," said Hausding. "The environment was different here as we usually train indoors, but we still did a good job in the outdoor pool."

Boudia, who beat Chinese hot favorite Qiu Bo to win the 10m platform gold at the London Olympic Games, was happy with his bronze.

"It was a quite different situation from London," he said. "It was my first time competing synchro with Steele. I think we were on a high level and I'm happy with that."

Women's 10m platform synchro and men's 3m springboard synchro will be contested on Thursday.
