First black female Olympic champion dies at 90

WASHINGTON, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Alice Coachman Davis, the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal, died early Monday in south Georgia at age 90.

Davis' death was confirmed by her daughter, Evelyn Jones.

Davis won the gold in the high jump at the 1948 London Olympic Games with an American and Olympic record of 1.68 meters, according to USA Track and Field, the American governing body of the sport. Davis was introduced to the USA Track and Field Hall of fame in 1975, and was to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004.
