SZEKESFEHERVAR, Hungary, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Lena Schoneborn of Germany won the women' s individual event at the European Modern Pentathlon Championships on Saturday in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, some 65 kilometers southwest of Budapest, while Germany triumphed over Ukraine in the women's team contest.
Schoneborn, winner at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and 2011 European champion, beat Victoria Tereshuk of Ukraine in the individual event with 1361 points to Tereshuk' s 1344, while Donata Rimsaite of Russia came in third with 1337 points.
Germany's women team (Lena Schoneborn, Janine Kohlmann, and Annika Schleu) won team event with 3912 points. The second place Ukrainian team (Victoria Tereshuk Anastasiya Spas, and Iryna Khokhlova) got 3911 points. Italian team (Claudia Cesarini, Gloria Tocchi, and Alice Sotero) took third place with 3882 points, following Germany and Ukraine.
Twenty three countries are competing for the top slot on the continent along with 120 athletes. Finals continue on Sunday with the men' s individual and team events. The final of the mixed relay is scheduled for Monday with the men' s and women' s relays set for Tuesday.
