SAN PAULO, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Lionel Messi's fine pass set up for Angel Di Maria's last winner in Argentina's 1-0 victory over Swizterland after extra time in the round of 16 here on Tuesday. The Barcelona superstar admitted it was really suffering before the goal was finally scored.
"Suffering, that was how we felt in the pitch," said Messi in the post-match conference. "I was quite nervous because we could not score a goal. And any mistake could have left us out of the World Cup. We did not want the penalty, we want to finish the match in extra time."
After both team tied 0-0 in the regular time, Di Maria's solo goal came in the 117th minute as Messi dribbled past his defender and feed the ball to the Real Madrid winger in the right of the box. Di Maria's one-touch low shot went past a diving Swiss goalie Diego Benaglio and into the bottom corner of the net.
"During that special play (that leads to the goal), I thought maybe I can take a chance then I saw Di Maria over there. I decided to pass the ball to him and fortunately we were able to celebrate the goal," said Messi, who has been elected Man of the Match.
"I do not know I deserve it or no. But what is important is that we have moved on. It is not an easy match," he said. "We were lucky enough to move on."
Switzerland concentrated on defence through the match and only left one striker in front waiting for counter attacks with the others retreating to their own half for most of the time.
"We know all matches will be on equal footing. You have to win the match," Messi said. "A lot of strong teams left the world cup for mistakes in minor details. It is the World Cup. When you are here you do not have easy opponents."
Argentina will face the winner of Belgium and the United States in the quarterfinals in Brasilia on Saturday.
