BOGOTA, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Colombia's press sang universal praise for James Rodriguez after the midfielder steered Los Cafeteros into the last eight of the World Cup for the first time.
"We're in the quarterfinals, now for Brazil," screamed the front page of Bogota-based El Tiempo.
"Now let's celebrate in peace," the newspaper added, in reference to previous victory celebrations in Colombia during this World Cup that have been marred by violence.
Rodriguez's two goals took his tournament tally to five, making him the top-scorer and a favorite to win the Golden Ball for the World Cup's best player.
His first half goal, a sublime volley from outside the penalty area - was described by El Espectador as "made for an art gallery".
"Thank you James Rodriguez," the daily said. "Your two goals have put Colombia into the quarterfinals, a door that has never been opened in its football history."
Semana highlighted the rapturous ovation afforded to the 22-year-old when he was substituted by Jose Pekerman in the 85th minute.
"The day the Maracana stood to applaud James," shouted the leading headline on Semana's front page.
"The goals of Colombia's No. 10 made him deserving of the appreciation shown to him at the mythical Maracana."
The newspaper even suggested the team's World Cup performances have helped heal wounds caused by the country's decades-old civil conflict.
"In 200 years of republican life there have been few joys for this country," it said. "We don't have to mention the many sad episodes that Colombia has lived through.
"However today football has come to give us a dose of positive emotion with a postcard that will forever remain in the memory of this corner of the planet."
